Preparing the Next Generation Today

AdvancED Accreditation Process

The vision of the Sumter District Schools is "Preparing the Next Generation Today" which requires emphasis on ensuring that high quality instruction takes place in every classroom. The words of our mission statement inform our instruction each and every day-- "The Sumter County School District is committed to providing a rigorous and relevant standards-based education in a safe environment. Through a partnership of students, parents, staff and community, students are given the opportunity to reach their full potential as lifelong learners and contributing members of society."

In our quest to fulfill this mission successfully, we embrace the AdvancED Accreditation process and the review by the visiting team, providing another set of eyes to help us provide the best education possible for our students and meet all our stakeholders' expectations.

External Review Visiting Team

William Rivenbark, Lead Evaluator

Curtis Nash, Associate Lead Evaluator

Suzi Cabe, Team Member

Kathleen Gingras, Team Member

Sarah Lawson, Team Member

The External Review Visiting Team was in our district from January 25th through 28th providing a comprehensive evaluation guided by the results of diagnostic instruments, in-depth review of data and documentation and the professional judgement of this team of qualified and highly trained evaluators.

The district has recieved the External Review Report and we are pleased to announce that the visiting team is recommending that the Sumter School District and its individual schools earn the distinction of accreditation for a five-year term. AdvancED will review these results to make the final determination. We anticipate their report and recommendations will be accepted during the annual AdvancED meeting in the fall of 2015.

What is AdvancED?

AdvancED, Advancing Excellence in Education, is the parent organization of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). AdvancED is dedicated to advancing excellence in education worldwide through accreditation, research and professional services. AdvancED is the world's largest education community, engaging 27,000 public and private schools and districts across the United States and in 65 countries worldwide and educating 15 million students. Through accreditation, schools and districts are able to validate and assure others of academic excellence. Accreditation ensures a standard of quality among credits, courses and grade level placements between schools and universities around the world. It also validates the equivalency of diplomas and certificates to other accredited schools and universities. In addition, students in accredited schools become part of a worldwide network of quality institutions focused on student performance.

How Does a District Achieve Accreditation?

District accreditation requires commitment from the system's leadership and school board. The school system must have in place a quality continuous improvement planning process focused on improving student learning. In addition, there must be a commitment to achieving and maintaining the following requirements:

          • Demonstration of compliance with the SACS CASI Accreditation Standards for Quality School Systems
          • Identification and illustration of the system's framework for continuous improvement
          • Evidence showcasing methods being employed to monitor and maintain quality assurance

An AdvancED External Review Team makes a three-day visit to the school system. The Quality Assurance Review Team gathers data and evidence during the visit by interviewing a wide-range of system and school level stakeholders, as well as visiting schools. In preparation for this visit, both the school district and each of its schools must:

          • Conduct and analyze stakeholder surveys from parents, students and certified staff.
          • Analyze and summarize student achievement data from state and local assessments.
          • Conduct a self-assessment of the current level of performance in regard to the five AdvancED accreditation standards.
          • Develop an executive summary from the information in the self-assessment.
